The Luo Family

Discovered in the narrow alleyways of Shanghai’s Xintiandi district, these bricks are from traditional “shikumen” houses from the mid-19th century. Shikumen are an ancient form of residence in Shanghai that represent the city’s most iconic architecture, fusing Chinese and Western structural styles. Inspired by the local use of the smoky toned bricks, we saw the opportunity for a rich addition to the ever-evolving face of Australian design. Characterised by their distinctively stark colour contrasts, each idiosyncratic brick is a capsule of stories just waiting to be told.
